Mtech's Mission

    The mission of the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (Mtech), a unit of the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, is to:

    • Educate the next generation of technology entrepreneurs;
    • Create successful technology ventures; and
    • Connect Maryland companies with university resources to help them succeed.

    Mtech has built a comprehensive entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem at the University of Maryland. Its programs arm top students from around the world with the knowledge of how to successfully launch companies and guide aspiring and existing entrepreneurs through the entire lifecycle of launching and maintaining technology-based ventures.

    Productivity Enhancement: Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Consulting

    The most successful biomanufacturing companies utilize their resources efficiently. They bring products to market faster, meet production deadlines, and minimize waste. The Biotechnology Research and Education Program's Productivity Enhancement consulting component applies improved manufacturing techniques to biomanufacturing.

    BREP staff utilize the following four-step approach for biomanufacturing consulting:

    STEP 1:


    BREP staff will assess how your plant gets things done, work with you to identify a baseline, and identify high impact productivity enhancement opportunities.

    STEP 2:


    A plan is developed that details specific improvement opportunities, as well as recommended implementation methods and processes.

    STEP 3:


    BREP staff will help implement the plan developed in step two. This may involve mentoring, facilitation, knowledge transfer, and joint efforts with your company's team. Pertinent training is provided to assure workforce understanding, buy-in, and commitment.

    STEP 4:


    Productivity enhancement is an ongoing exercise.  As your plant's productivity improves and gets closer to meeting your business objectives, it is important to keep the momentum going. BREP staff can help measure your performance, hone your competitive edge, and continually improve plant productivity.

    Companies planning a facility expansion or relocation can take advantage of the BREP staff's expert advice for tasks including contractor review, new equipment selection, and floor layout design. Biotech team members can create computer simulations of the proposed facility to help companies evaluate alternative processing flows, while process development solutions can be tested in the BSF.
